Brooks Produces Big for Falcons Offense, Leads to Win in Opener

Senior QB Michael Brooks lines up under center, Rooke Young for FCA.

Murfreesboro, TN. August 26, 2011.

.

Michael Brooks has stepped up as a leader and the key weapon for his team's offense.  The Franklin Christian Academy Falcons opened their 2011 season with a road win against the Holloway High School Hawks, 22-20... with a dramatic late comeback on Friday.

.

FCA's first drive featured a 3rd down Brooks completion to tight end David Walker for 30 yards. The drive ended in a punt, but the Hawks were forced to start from their own 14. After two penalties and a fumble, HHS QB Oliver Bane was sacked by Falcons DE Adrian Young for a safety.

Adrian Young (35) and Josh McMullan (88) pursue Treanous Gosie of Holloway.

.

Brooks came back on the second possession, connecting with KC Jorgensen for a 10 yard TD completion off a bootleg, with 7:55 remaining in the half. Hector Vargas was stopped short on the 2 point conversion attempt.

.

Vargas came up big on defense later in the 2nd quarter with a score-saving stop of Treanous Gosie after gaining 54 yards for the Hawks. Time ran out on Holloway and they were held scoreless in the first half.

.

The 3rd quarter was all Gosie, starting with the kickoff return of 33 yards. Runs of 31 and 34 yards on the first possession of the second half by Gosie put the Hawks to within 2. FCA led 8-6 after 3 quarters.

.

In spite of Brooks' continued successes with his feet and arm, the Falcons appeared to be doomed after two consecutive fumbles by Jorgensen resulting in two more Hawks rushing TDs. Holloway had a commanding 20-8 lead with 3:30 remaining.

.

Gavyn Bridges gave FCA decent field position to the 31 with an 11 yard kickoff return. Brooks hit Walker again for 23, then had runs of 20 and 31 yards, giving the Falcons another 6 points with 2:41 to go. They trailed 20-14 after another failed 2 point conversion.

.

Gavyn Bridges (12) faces Norvell Turner (25). Franklin Christian defeated Holloway 22-20.

.

Walker, also the kicker for FCA, placed an onside kick perfectly on the right, and Holloway's Jay Hendrickson could not handle it. Jorgensen came up big for FCA with the recovery.

.

Brooks this time started from his own 48, but found the offense sputtering a bit. After a procedure penalty, an incompletion, and a 6 yard scramble, another big 3rd down throw to Walker on the right sideline moved the chains to the Hawks 18. A late hit out of bounds on Walker moved it another 9, half the distance to the goal.

.

It was Bridges who came up with a big run, starting inside, then bouncing wide left to find the endzone- locking the score at 20 with 50 seconds remaining. An interesting celebration penalty on Bridges pushed the conversion back to the 18.

.

Brooks threw over the top to Jorgensen on the right sideline, and an interference flag was thrown on Holloway's Lamonte Pucket. From the 9, Brooks again sprinted out right, finding David Walker in the back of the endzone for the two point pass completion. The Falcons had regained the lead and were able to stop the Hawks for two plays. The win was sealed at 22-20.

.

FCA (1-0) will travel to Sewanee for another MTAC game next week at St. Andrews (0-1).

.

Hector Vargas makes a touchdown saving stop of Treanous Gosie late in the first half.

2011 Football Pre-Season Camp Starts August 1
New Head Coach Drew Robison is leading a strong group of returning seniors and combining them with several new and younger players  as preparation for the 2011 season begins.
Senior Quarterback Michael Brooks has had some starting experience  and returning starters Gavyn Bridges and David Walker also appear to be impact players.
Strong summer workouts from Rooke Young and Walker have provided early optimism for the new coach.
“Several players have embraced the summer workouts from the day I arrived. (the last week of June) The ones that have been working hard will be that much further ahead. We’ve got a solid group of seniors, and some opportunities for some exciting young and new talent as well.”
Cameron Moynihan is a new Junior who hopes to make an immediate contribution at wide receiver and defensive back. New Freshman KC Jorgensen hopes to see action at receiver and possibly quarterback.
“A lot will happen over the course of the week. It will be exciting as it unfolds,” said Robison.
The Falcons will be in practices, film sessions, team building activities, and conditioning workouts for six days, Monday through Saturday, 11 hours a day. They should be learning a lot about each other by the week’s end.
